Shale gas could save America from "peak oil" -- and it has a "Walmart Effect"; film is planned on Keystone Pipeline project

Daniel Yergin, an energy guru, appeared on the Fareed Zakaria show yesterday, and explained bow shale gas has ballooned as a major energy resource since developments in 2008.  He says natural gas production and sales will undergo a “Walmart Effect”.

His comments comport with the Pickens Plan (from T. Boone Pickens), which would envision a long period where the US switches from coal and oil to natural gas.

Marc Gunther has an article about Yergin and his book from Penguin, “The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World”, which Zakaria has recommended.  The discussion is on Greebiz, Nov. 9, 2011, here.   Zakaria has recommended the book as containing "all you need to know about where we're going with energy".

But the major controversy would be if natural gas, even with as modern an implementation as possible, will be as clean as solar and wind.  Yergin is said to favor a carbon tax.

An important process is "fracking" (or "hydraulic fracturing") and it does have its critics, as here

NPR has a major story dated Sept. 20, here.
